Nano actually changed some things related to keybinds recently (in nano 8.0), the main change is that nano made ^F and ^B work for searching forward and backward. Secondly, if you started nano with `--modernbindings` (or just `-/`, or if `argv[0][0] == 'e'`), it will default to using more common, modern, keybindings (such as ^c/^v for copy/paste, ^z/^y for undo/redo, and others).

The problem with emacs and why vim / neovim is a lot more popular is that Emacs is a jack of all trades and doesn't excel at any of them. It's basically a GUI framework for e-lisp that you can write anything in (git client, emails, editing text), and it's not even that good at it because it makes emacs a hard dependency, it's single threaded, uses an obscure language nobody knows and isn't very scalable for large apps when compared to something like Rust / Python / JS. It makes a lot more sense to just make your own terminal app than to write something for emacs.

i usually use swapfiles over swap partition. i only have 8gb ram on my laptop with 2gb swapfile. with blackbox it idles at like 300mb ram and the only time ive ever seen the swap used is with multiple vms running.

I'll never understand the absolute venom kali gets from the Linux community. Most people who keep repeating that its "just for script kiddies" misses the mark and it sounds more like people piling on more vitriol when they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. (No, im not referring to DT, but definitely people in these comments and in forums I've read) Can script kiddies use it? Yes. However, as a training tool, there is no better distro. Period. I used it to learn digital forensics and I model all my other environments around Kali now. That being said, Parrot is a better pentesting tool in my opinion. To be perfectly honest, any distro can double as a pentesting distro. The thing about scripting tools is that they exist to make the life of a cybersecurity analyst easier. I simply don't have time to create original scripts every single time i need them. Ill write a few that are necessary for specific use cases but of they work out of the box, there's no shame in using them. If you sit in your basement and have all the time in the world to code your own apps and write your own scripts. Good for you. But it's a waste of time imo, especially if you don't need to.

Why Linux? I still try to figure that out. Sure, it's faster but there isn't much to do while on Linux. There are no decent/easy to use software for my needs. So it doesn't mean that Linux is fast if I can't do much with it. Speed is one thing, but ultimately, some of us just want to run decent software to accomplish tasks, and I struggle finding good software for that on Linux.

how they are not targeting Linux users ? 90% of servers are using Linux and they are mostly the big companies that can pay 100k $ if their data got hacked, so you can't say i am protected against varuses because they don't target Linux system. but thanks for the explanation it helped a lot

This is by far the quickest and most useful terminal tutorial I have ever seen. Densely packed with all the info you need to get started dicking around in the weird world of computers that act like actual computers.

After trying a few distros, you eventually realise that they're all ultimately just Linux with different sets of packages. The packages the distro provides just stops being a factor, and the main thing that matters at that point is how you interact with the core of the system, which basically comes down to init system and package manager (both of which can be swapped on any distro as they too are just packages). If there's something I don't like about my current system, I change it, without needing to find a distro with the changes I want. That said, I'm comfortable with the specific distro I have where I don't have to remember what I changed, as _all_ of it is layed out in a single git repository, and I can rebuild the entire system from scratch just by fetching that repository.

I'm not one of those "users like us." For several years I've been running both Windows 10 and Linux Mint on my computers. I was waiting for the day when I could ditch Windows 10 and not miss it. That time is now. I drive my car but I'm not a mechanic. Enjoy your tinkering.

I just made this exact mistake. I'm so used to forcing a rapid shutdown or restart all the time, I downloaded a kernel update, didn't tell me by the way, looked just like a normal app update. It looked like it was done installing, I did a sudo reboot now, now the new kernel won't boot, because it wasn't finished installing. Now I see why there are several kernels to boot from, it's not a big deal, just kind of a pain to remove the partially installed kernel and try it again, perhaps with a little more patience this time.

EXCELLENT Video! I often wonder if Siduction with the KDE Plasma desktop environment installed would allow a person the best experience, as an alternative to KDE Neon. However, they're polar opposites. KDE Neon has Ubuntu LTS (stable distro) with KDE Plasma (a cutting edge desktop environment). Siduction (a cutting edge distro) with KDE Plasma (stable desktop environment). It's almost like seeing to different sides of the same coin.

We are just common user, not power user whose always love to run the terminal. As windows user, we just want to productove with our work casually, and not to deep involve with technical thing. Easiest and user ftiendly user interface is what we look for.

Considering the mechanics of an SSD and the limited life-span for writing-OPs I wouldn't want my SSD to handle SWAP (or /tmp - where most of the distros are thankfully switching to tmpfs)

installing software is not better on linux. When i tried ubuntu installing steam and obs was a pain. the package management is so fragmented on linux, you have to learn about repositories, flatpaks, snaps, deb package to make apps work/install correctly. It is not easy as sudo apt install steam-installer. On windows choco and winget is so much better, it takes care of all the dependencies and there is only one type of package and it just works.
